HWD Core Programs

The HWD approach to service is holistic. HWD staff members take into account all of an individual's physical, psychological and social circumstances when providing services. A holistic approach is important because a person's health cannot be fully addressed unless we consider the whole person.

Health Assessment Review: An analysis of a person's health status, risk for disease, readiness to change and ability, nutrition confidence and the ability to increase physical activity, safely and effectively, are all considerations in planning a personalized, tailored wellness plan. The Navy’s Health Risk Assessment is used in planning and delivering a well-versed plan to the member.

Physical Fitness: Using the expertise and training of the Command CFL, a personalized exercise prescription can be obtained. Health coaching is also presented as an integral part of the Physical Fitness Program. MWR certified trainers and fitness centers are also utilized in the tailoring of this program to the individual.

Healthy Nutrition: The Navy’s weight management program, entitled, “ShipShape” is offered on an individual and group basis. This program is a 4-week behavior change program addressing health fitness, healthy nutrition and behavior modification. Additional services can be accessed by contacting the Registered Dietitian. An InBody Body Composition Assessment is presented to each participant of this program feature. The overall program tailors a performance plan encompassing strategies for weight loss, weight gain, overall performance and maintenance. ShipShape Weight Management is offered at least 2 times per year.

Stress Management: Stress relief techniques, the stress continuum and positive coping skills are all addressed within this program offering. The use of the Relax, Relax Toolkit on the NMCPHC website is utilized to guide the participant to more extensive resources and activities, promoting stress management and relaxation throughout the lifecycle.

General Wellness Education: Classes on topics such as healthy lifestyles, good sleep habits, increased resiliency, preventing chronic disease through healthy living habits, and self-care are available. Group classes are rotated and offered at different times throughout the year, by request. These programs can be presented at the deck plate, if more than 5 individuals are seeking assistance and education.

Tobacco Use Prevention Cessation Education: A 4-week group or individual approach to quitting tobacco use, for life. An assessment of an individual's readiness to change with a discussion of possible options for becoming tobacco-free are presented. The program is a three-prong approach to quitting: healthy
